Ready Player One: Pgs. 99-248

Things within the OASIS have definitely intensified since the first ninety-nine pages of the book. Not even with just the hunt for the egg, but with relationships among gunters as well.

I wasn't surprised at all when Parzival was the first to find the Copper Key. After all, it said back on page 9, "After five long years, the Copper Kay had finally been found, by an eighteen-year-old kid living in a trailer park on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. That kid was me." I also wasn't really surprised that Art3mis found the Jade Key first, and Aech found it second. I sort of predicted that. What did surprise me a little is that the Sixers found the second gate AND the Crystal Key before either Art3mis, Aech, or Parzival, even though he was slacking.

During these set of pages, I actually gained a lot of respect for him and I also feel bad for him. He was willing to give up these past years of his life searching for the billion dollar reward just so he could be with Art3mis. But at the same time, it's like he's already come so far so why not finish it? He spent so much time with Art3mis, which isn't really a bad thing since he was inlove with her, and she was his true prize. But in the end, Art3mis blew him off anyways. So now Parzival wasted all that time with who he thought was the love of his life when he could've been more focused on finding the egg. Since he was so distracted, it caused him to lose his ranking. At this point with the Sixers so far in the lead, I don't really care who finds the egg first as long as it's either Parzival, Aech, Art3mis, or even Shoto.

It made me really upset when Shoto came to Parzival and told him that not only did the Sixers kill Daito's avatar, but they personally killed him as well. Ever since they tried to kill Wade, I knew how far they would go, I just didn't know when or who the first to die was. I think that just made the game so much more real.

I also think it's cool how all the predictions we made in class last week would come true. We, as a class, predicted that Wade would run into problems with the Sixers, and that he did. The Sixers tried to kill Parzival's and Art3mis's avatars at the birthday party and I'm sure they're still going to go after them in the future of the book as well. They'll do anything they can in order to stop anyone else from finding the egg before they do. We also predicted that Parzival would get distracted by Art3mis, and that definitely happened as well. For the first half of the section we had to read, all Parzival was doing was hanging out with Art3mis, and I think that put him behind a lot.

One thing that really stood out to me was at the end of our reading on page 247 when Wade and Shoto were talking and Shoto was saying how finding the egg wasn't his most important priority anymore. Parzival asked what was, and all Shoto said was, "Revenge." After that response, I'm definitely excited to see what will happen in our next reading of this book.

  1. Now that the book is gaining momentum, it is easier to feel what the character's feel and get excited for their accomplishments. Needless to say, there are somethings that have been extremely disappointing. My main disappointment comes from how Wade took his break up with Art3mis. I get that he has a had a crush on the woman for years, but he shouldn't have let that get in his way. This was my initial thought before I remembered that his social skills are trash. When you spend most of your time in a virtual reality where you only talk to one person and you spend your time doing research that no one else cares to do, your social skills are not going to be the best. This also means his coping mechanisms are also going to be trash. This is another instance where Cline has mimicked real life. A majority of us spends most of our time online. In exchange, we become socially awkward and super sensitive. The rest of the book is proving to be quite interesting.

  2. Yes, the book is finally getting more interesting, I agree with that. More intensity and more of people thinking, what is really going to happen, including me. But, I do not think that Wade was willing to give up with billion-dollar egg prize up just to be with or talk to Art3mis. As I do feel that he obviously likes her and would want to be with her in real life, I also think that to try and past some time away, Art3mis was his number one person to do that with. Since basically the entire IOI is out to get all of them, trying to lay low for a little bit is definitely something they all have thought about, and wade is doing this by spending time with Art3mis, not just being lazy with the game to only talk with her.
