Ready Player One Chapters 1-9

After reading the first 99 pages of Ready Player One by Ernist Cline, I still can't tell if being in a world like an OASIS would be really cool or not. I think the idea of living life online could be really convenient but it could also be really boring. It would be helpful because the main character, Wade, attends school online. I think that's a neat concept because if something happens where you're not feeling well or you just can't make it to school one day you could still attend school in the OASIS. Plus having the OASIS would be a nice way to escape the real world for a while if you needed to. I think fully living life in the OASIS would be boring though because although I need my personal space, I don't want to physically be alone all the time like Wade is.

I think that if this book were real life and the OASIS and Halliday's egg really did exist, then this would be a reflection on how the lower class lived their life. Wade isn't from a wealthy family at all and he's been searching for this egg for years now. If he had enough money to get by comfortably do you really think he would spend years searching for this egg, researching Halliday, and reading all his favorite books? That's just a lot of time and dedication for someone who already has enough to get by. If Wade has been doing this for over 5 years and has only made it to the first gate, then who knows how long it'll take him to actually find the egg. I know Wade eventually ends up finding the egg but what if you're someone like Art3mis and you also spend all your time searching for this egg but you don't even find it? That was just a waste of so much time for someone who wouldn't even need the money.

  1. I agree with all the aspects your talked about in your post. Wade is from the lower class, which gives him more of a incentive to go out and try to spend a big chunk of his life trying to find an egg in a virtual game that could give him all the fortune and fame he could ever dream of, so he could get out of the lower social class that he's living in currently. Also, I agree with the fact that it would be dragging to always be alone and on your own sitting on a laptop trying to find something that you're not even sure of exists, that also takes up so much time. He's spent his young youthful years trying to find the egg, instead of trying to go out and experience the real world, as a young teenager. He's spent so much time wrapped up in something virtual, and in the end if he doesn't collect the egg, the time that he wasted will never be able to be gained back. I don't know if I agree with the fact that he'll end up finding the egg in the end, because I don't know if the egg really does even exist. I sure hope he does find the egg though, because if anyone deserves it, it's Wade.

  2. I agree with most of your concepts and ideas. The only thing that makes me contrast is Wade doesn't know anything different besides being forced to always be on OASIS. It's his comfort zone. If he had to live a social life like we do he would be miserable. Hence why he was so ecstatic to hear about the online schooling. It is unhealthy and sad to think about though. And it definently reflects negatively because he is overweight and doesn't take care of himself. If he did come from a somewhat tolerable home life maybe things would be different for him because he does seem to have drive and passion for things, like finding the egg. He doesn't know anything different to put passion into so he puts it all into finding the egg. People who aren't poor probably just do it for fun, or are bored.

    Great points!
