Deathnote Final Thoughts
On Thursday we had our in class socratic seminar and I really enjoyed it because a lot of people had different opinions on a lot of the questions that were asked in class. I think the one that stood out to me most was when someone asked if they thought Light was killing in order to make the world a better place still, or was he doing it to protect himself and because he was addicted. I definitely think that he's doing it to protect himself at this point because he's killed a lot of innocent people now too and not just criminals. And I think he'd addicted because on page 327 when he realized Naomi gave him a fake name, he freaks out and thinks to himself "I have to get her real name and eliminate her. Less than three minutes left... I'm running out of time... I've got to do something." I think that was his first sign of panic when his little plan didn't work.
Also, even though we know through Ryuk's little hints that Light loses the battle between him and L, I still want to know how it ends. I wanted to see just how crazy Light got in volume 2 and see what he does to try to protect himself. Honestly, I didn't think I was going to like this book because I don't really like reading in the first place and this was just a whole new genre for me, but in the end I actually really enjoyed it. I think it's really cool how it looks so simple when you're looking at it but there's actually a lot of hidden meaning to it as well. It's definitely the type of book that can lead to great discussion and maybe some controversy as well.

The Socratic Seminar was certainly one of my favorite class periods. Being forced to discuss different viewpoints of the novel, and creating hypothetical questions about it was an eye-opening experience for me. Light’s character is so psychotic and complex that I think it’s difficult to understand the lengths he will go in order to kill others. He has clearly become addicted to killing, and his victims obviously do not matter to him. I do not believe Light ever intended the Death Note to be used for the justice of others, but I do believe that in his mind he still believes that he is doing the right thing. I am considering purchasing volume two to see just how far Light’s psychotic tendencies will go, and I am curious to see how L manages to defeat him.
ReplyDeleteI had really enjoyed the seminar myself too. It was a bit tough to jump in at times with everyone talking but it was nice to get my points and questions out there. Light has definitely blending with his Kira side and doesn't care about killing randoms anymore. He is going to do anything to beat L. If that means killing his family, I think he will do it. I want to see what happens in volume two but I may just read only or watch the anime because the manga wasn't my favorite style of reading. It was good to experience it but it's not something I would necessarily read on my own.
