Deathnote p. 195-302

There were a few things that caught my attention in this section of the reading. The first section is when Light is sitting with his family at dinner and his dad is telling them about the Kira investigation and how Kira killed 12 people from the FBI. On page 218, you can see the reactions on all their faces. Light's mom and sister both have exasperated looks on their face and they're completely shocked to find out this information. Then when you look at Light, he's just sitting there calm as ever telling his dad that he's proud of him. I feel like Light should've at least tried to look a little more shocked because personally I think he was way too calm for that situation.
There were also two things that confused me in this section. The first is on page 234 when it's explaining the rules of the Deathnote. It says, "Even if you do not actually possess the Deathnote, the effect will be the same if you can recognize the person and his/her name to place in the blank." I was a little confused by what this actually meant because putting a name in the blank would result in that person dying and I thought you could only kill someone if you had the actual death note.
There's also another part on page 255 that sparked my interest. Ryuk is sitting there watching the wrestling match while Light is thinking to himself. At the bottom of the page, Light thinks to himself "The real battle starts now." But out loud Ryuk says "Huh? It's already over..." I know Ryuk is referring to the game but I'm wondering if it's supposed to be taken as irony because he knows that L and the other investigators are going to eventually find Light which would result in the battle being over. I could be completely wrong, that was just one of my main thoughts while reading this section.

  1. From reading your post I realized I need to pay more attention to the detail in the pictures because I didn't notice that dinner table scene, thank you. I think that is a really good point, if Light wants to play this off he needs to put more concern into the whole Kira thing. The death note rules confuse me a bit too, I think it's just the wording of them. I understood them more when I read them in context and not just on the black pages where they're listed. I think that is also a good point with Ryuk in your last paragraph, I caught that too and thought the same thing. I wish Ryuk played a bigger part in the book, or at least right now.

  2. Your point over Ryuk is fascinating and this line "Huh? It's already over..." does show that Ryuk may already know the outcome. Shinigami's eyes are especially valuable, he uses these to see when people will die. Furthermore, Light didn't even notice what Ryuk said because he is occupied with beating L. This whole book will come down to this competition between Light and L. This is due to their IQ balance and I wonder if this battle will continue through the next books. Also these Death note rules are often vague when you read this, so this plays into Light testing the book on multiple occasions
